St George's Church - application to demolish is filed

- 19-May-2004
Barratt West London have filed a planning application to demolish St George's Church and replace it with a block of 19 apartments.

Whilst the plan is for the body of the church to be demolished, the intent is to keep the church tower as the main pedestrian entrance to the site.

A block of 19 apartments in a similar style but not colour as Capital West would be built along the back boundary fence-line from the east boundary but leaving a small gap on the west boundary between it and the hotel.

Vehicle entry to the underground parking is proposed to be via the entrance and car park of Building 1 of Capital West.

This unpopular planning application has been responded to by the committee of the Holland Gardens Residents Community - a copy of the letter to the council is available via this link (acrobat reader required). This pdf is 1Mb in size

  • Strike a balance
Apart from being a pretty church, adding character, that is clearly lacking from the High St in Brentford, St George's Church has a considerable Historic importance for the area. Only a short walk across Kew Bridge are the beautiful, historic, Kew Gardens, surrounded by the old Green the River Thames and the beauty of Kew itself. Should we not be preserving a balance of interest and beauty on both sides of the River?

Look around London suburbs. What little beauty is left? Should we not be preserving and restoring rather than destroying?
