Assael receive go ahead for Barratt's Brentford Scheme
- 26-Feb-2001
Assael Architecture has received planning permission for a £60 million mixed-use riverside development on Brentford High Street for developer Barratt West London.
Planning was awarded after an Article 14, issued by the government Office for London last April, was withdrawn. The proposal for the 4.3 acre site had been recommended for approval by Hounslow planners; the scheme having been designed in accordance with a planning brief issued by the local authority as part of their plan to regenerate Brentford's riverside. Reasons for government intervention are unclear.
The scheme is on a former British Gas site with a chequered history of industrial uses and should act as a catalyst for redevelopment in the area. For developers Barratt West London, it will include 232 quality apartments, a 98 roomed hotel and a music museum, which is being relocated from an adjacent site. A quarter of the housing will be offered as affordable.
Assael¹s comprehensive design approach was based on intensive consultation with many local groups and reflects the aspirations of both the community and local authority. John Assael, director of Assael Architecture, said: "This is an opportunity for the local authority to work in partnership with land owners to achieve real and sustainable regeneration of contaminated and redundant land. We are very excited about the opportunity this gives us as architects and urban planners."
Barratt West London Regional Chairman, David Pretty, said: "We are delighted to have received planning for our Brentford development and we are confident about the design. Assael were chosen for their experience in inner city brownfield land and for working closely with local authorities and the communities involved".
The first phase of construction is due to go on site immediately and a final completion is intended for 2003.
