Commendation for Best Use of a Brownfield Site

- 01-Jul-2003
Capital West (Phase I) High Street Brentford achieves commendation in the National Homebuilder Design Awards 2003.

The brownfield site on which Capital West is being developed was occupied by Brentford Gas Works from the 1850s until the 1960s, when natural gas made the gasworks obsolete, but part of the site had been occupied since before 1828 by The Red Lion Brewery, which later became the Royal Brewery (Brentford) until it closed in 1923 and was demolished in 1926.

When Barratt bought the 4.3-acre brownfield site from British Gas in 1999, it had been disused for many years, the last gasholder having been demolished in 1988. Two phases of remediation works had been carried out by British Gas, and land improvement works required in the third stage of remediation were completed before construction began.
