Brentford Community Council visit Holland Gardens

- 10-Jun-2004
Members of the Brentford Community Council (BCC) visited Holland Gardens today to see the church for themselves in light of the recent planning application to demolish the church.

The BCC review all planning applications within the Brentford Ward and came to appreciate the new perspective on St George's Church that is now available.

St George's Church on Brentford High Street is mostly seen in a fleeting glimpse by passers by in cars and buses. Few know that the church can be admired from behind as well, thanks to a public right-of-way built directly through the Capital West development in Holland Gardens.

Originally known as Chapel Lane, the road behind the church disappeared for many years thanks to the Brentford Gas Works previously located on the site of Capital West (see image library feature). The right-of-way is back now and will continue east through the yet to be constructed Thames Water development, until it joins onto Kew Bridge Road by the Steam Museum.

From behind St George's Church makes for a far more serene view and could be appreciated by more - if it were still standing to do so. Come and appreciate the church for yourselves whilst you still can - enter from North Road behind the Travelodge Hotel or just walk through the gates at the entrance to Holland Gardens and turn left.
