Capital West residents contribute to river cleanup

- 22-Oct-2004
Prompted by email calls to Capital West residents, a number of us turned out last Saturday (16th October 2004) to help clean up the Thames immediately in front of Holland Gardens.

Local boatyard owner Mr Nigel Moore of Ridgeway Motors organised the event with Thames21 providing gloves, wellies and much needed advice on procedures whilst clearing the debris.

The Port of London Authority provided several cages to deposit debris into, which were distributed along the Thames in front of Holland Gardens, and a barge was moored directly out in front. Much to our surprise we managed to fill the barge with all sorts of debris including wire ropes, large and small pieces of metal, and the inevitable shopping trolleys and bicycles. And all this in only two hours!

There is still considerable debris left behind and the plan is to encourage some more 1 day visits to continue the cleanup, so watch this space for more dates as they become available.

For a photograph of the volunteers get your copy of the Brentford Chiswick & Isleworth Times dated Friday 22 October 2004.
