St George's Church - application to demolish is REFUSED

- 15-Dec-2004
The application to demolish St George's Church and replace it with 19 apartments went before the Hounslow Council's Sustainable Development Committee last night - and was refused!

In a surprise turn of events the application was rejected citing the need to consider the heritage of Brentford in renewed light. The planning committee now had the benefit of being some 5 years down the track since the original plan to demolish the church was considered, so could consider the application as new.

With more detailed information supplied by members of the Holland Gardens Resident's Community (ResCo) tabled not only before hand, but also on the night of the meeting (inclusive of 5 minutes verbal presentation by the Secretary of the ResCo), the planning committee seemed to take into account such unassailable facts inclusive of burial information and the large amount of apartment development going on within Brentford.

The committee concluded (as we had hoped to encourage) that it seemed unnecessary to demolish a landmark building in such a prominent position for only 19 apartments.

It appears common sense prevailed on the night, much to the relief of not only the ResCo but alo the many other Brentford citizens who had contributed their opinions via the written word, web site forum commentary or newspaper articles.

Merry Christmas Sarah Trimmer, Thomas Layton, and the SDC committee.
