Clean-up operation at Waterman’s Park is long overdue

- 14-Oct-2005
A local resident continues the discussion on cleaning up the stretch of the Thames in front of Waterman’s Park.

Sir – you recently highlighted the promotion of a new guide, the Thames Picnic Walk, which should prove a most welcome means of opening the public eye to the greatest of our assets.

Was there intentional irony in choosing the Waterman’s Park frontage as the backdrop to the photo illustrating the launch? Being perhaps our most neglected stretch of waterfront, your paper in the past has had occasion to most properly exhort the authorities to take action in clearing this up.

I should note that following my meeting with the PLA mentioned previously, I finally received a letter from the a couple of days ago. To quote:

"The PLA’s salvage department will also, very shortly, be programming a clear-up at Waterman’s Park, in conjunction with Thames21, with the aim of removing anything that the harbourmaster assesses is likely to become a danger to safe navigation and use of the Thames."

So well done the PLA. Even though it’s only partially addressing the problem, it’s a start, and will hopefully spur the council into doing their share.
