Proposal to widen Brentford High Street

- 16-Mar-2007
A proposal was tabled last night at the recent Hounslow Council Isleworth & Brentford Local Area Committee (Planning) to widen Brentford High Street immediately in front of Holland Gardens.

The main thrust of the proposal is to widen the road for a cycle lane on each side of the street.

The widening entails eating into about 10% of Waterman's Park by creating another wall 1.5-2 m into the park from where the current wall is. The gap would then be filled, the footpath moved over and the road widened.

The first activities will be to drill some test bore holes into the park to see if it can sustain addition construction and to determine what issues might be involved in construction. This is expected to take place in the next few weeks.

Trees will be removed and the access to the park immediately in front of Holland Gardens, whilst only 4 years old and built as part of this development, will be destroyed in the widening proposal, though this would be replaced with another access point.

  • expensive fix for council mistake
The council seems to have made a very expensive mistake. When Holland Gardens was built, the council failed to secure enough space at the front of the site for road widening. Either 3 metres for a bus lane, OR 2 metres for cycle lanes. This failure is going to cost everyone in taxes, and maybe loss of some of the park. We could be paying already through accidents and injuries, although I have no information about this. A council transport planner told me in 2002 that there was no point in seeking more road space as the St Georges Church buildings were protected. (I’m pleased to read Holland Gardens Residents Community resisted demolition.) So now instead of a road space problem by the church, the whole length of the park is affected, and the cost might run to a few million pounds.
