Bus Lane removed

- 16-Feb-2008
A small but very congesting section of bus lane has been removed during recent resurfacing works allowing for better traffic flow.

Back in December 2005 I (Secretary, ResCo) wrote to a local councillor and the Hounslow traffic team identifying a small stretch of bus lane close to Kew Bridge as a major source of east-bound congestion (red line in the image here).

It appears this was taken seriously and the bus lane has been removed - as noted on the local website forum in www.BrentfordTW8.com.

The message from Chris Calvi-Freeman, Head of Transport, London Borough of Hounslow reads:

"We have also taken the opportunity, on an experimental basis, to remove the last section of the eastbound bus lane, between Green Dragon Lane and the approach to Kew Bridge junction. This will hopefully reduce delays to city-bound traffic (including buses) on those occasions when a delay in Kew/Richmond causes a tailback over the Kew Bridge and onto Kew Bridge Road."

He went on to add:

"Reconstruction of the kerb line on the south side of the road, in close cooperation with Thames Water (as they undertook their mains replacement programme) has resulted in sufficient space to accommodate a 1.5m wide westbound cycle lane on the carriageway, replacing the former on-footway cycle track which was unpopular with cyclists. A green surface will be installed shortly, and a consultation will shortly be undertaken to establish whether there is support for a short term parking and loading bay in the footway outside Regatta Point, which would allow the installation of double yellow lines along the south side kerb line, ensuing that parked vehicles do not obstruct the cycle lane."

See the Council response to the original letter.
